A way of working with pressure

You respond differently in different weather.

Pressure eats insight. The same person reads a situation well on a calm day and badly on a hard one. In Any Weather is a way to notice that happening, in time to do something about it.

It is a framework, a coaching practice, and a set of habits. It works the same whether the weather is a budget that just fell apart, a child who cannot read yet, a team that has stopped telling you the truth, or a trail you have never run.

Not a personality type

Most leadership and personality tools sort people into fixed types. That is tidy and mostly wrong. Put a calm, generous, clear-headed person under enough load, for long enough, with enough people watching, and you get a different response. Not a worse person. A compressed one.

The useful question is not what kind of person you are. It is what this kind of weather does to you, and whether you can catch it before it costs something.

One arena, Scale

Three lives, one weather

A leader

Your first system-level job. The contract, the politics, and the low expectations are all older than you are. You can see what needs to change. You cannot tell whether pushing on it is brave or career-ending.

A parent

Your child is in third grade and still sounding out words. Everyone has an opinion. The size of the gap, and the number of experts, makes you feel like the one person in the room not qualified to decide anything.

A teenager

Trying out for something you have never done, in front of people who have done it for years. The thing itself might be fine. The size of it is what freezes you.

All three are in the same arena. The question is the same for each of them: is this truly dangerous, or just unfamiliar?

Practice

You cannot learn this at a desk

The method puts people back at the beginning of something on purpose. Running a trail, learning an instrument, drawing something that will be looked at. Being a beginner is the one condition where the drift is impossible to hide from yourself. Then we talk about Monday.

Who this is for

Leaders and the teams they run. Parents of a kid who is struggling to learn. Teenagers who are good at hiding what pressure does to them. The weather does not care what your job is.

The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.
