Visibility
Am I responding to reality, or to how it looks?

What the weather does
Everything you do is watched, and the watching changes what you do. You start choosing the option that is easiest to explain over the one that is right. Or you avoid the decision because it will be seen. The audience becomes the weather.
What it looks like
A leader
Every decision is public. The press, the board, the staff lounge, the parent group. You catch yourself asking “how will this look?” before “is this right?” and the two questions start getting the same answer.
A parent
Other parents, the teacher, your own family. You find yourself defending your kid’s progress to people instead of looking at it honestly yourself. Their opinion of your parenting has become a factor in the plan.
A teenager
Everything is seen, recorded, and compared. You are performing a version of yourself most of the day, and it gets hard to tell what you would do if nobody was watching.
Two directions
Too much
Staging. Managing the story instead of the situation. Making decisions for how they will read rather than what they will do. Usually Staging, Shaming, or Overreach.
Too little
Hiding. Avoiding the decision because it will be seen. Doing the work privately so nobody can judge it, which also means nobody can help. Usually Overcalculation, Holding back, or Abdication.
Stories we tell ourselves
“How is this going to look?”
“I can’t be seen to fail at this.”
“I’ll show them when it’s ready.”
“They’re all judging me.”
The work
Ask what you would do if no one could see it. Then do the version of that you can stand behind in public. Not the version that looks best. The version you could explain plainly to someone who knew everything. Visibility is survivable when there is nothing to hide.
When others are in it
People in Visibility need somewhere unwatched to think. Give them a private first draft. Separate the moment of deciding from the moment of announcing.
When you set the weather
You create Visibility when you make every step public, when you reward the look of progress, or when failure gets punished in front of others. Let people work in the open without being judged at every step. Praise the honest report over the polished one.
