Fixation
Identity bound to one mission. Judgment narrows while it lasts and collapses when it ends.
What it looks like
One goal has become who you are. New information gets sorted into “helps the mission” and “distraction,” and the second pile grows. People who question the goal become opponents. When the mission ends, by success or failure, you do not know what to do with yourself.
The flattering misread
Heroic perseverance. Dedication. “At least they care.”
The tell
You cannot describe what you would do if the goal were achieved tomorrow. Or if it were taken away.
What it protects
The question of who you are without this. Fixation keeps that question from ever coming up.
Where it shows up
Slow build, when the long effort becomes an identity. Depletion, when stopping feels like dying. Repair, when you keep fighting the last war instead of preparing for the next one.
The move back
Name three things you are besides this. Ask who in your life would tell you the mission has become the problem, and ask them. Hold the goal loosely enough to see what is around it.
