Too little
· Pattern 8 of 10
Holding back
Real strength withheld, waiting for permission or certainty.
What it looks like
You know the answer and you do not say it. You could do the thing and you wait for someone to ask. You have more than the room needs and you give it less than it has. You tell yourself you are being a good team player, or that it is not your place, or that you will speak up when you are more sure.
The flattering misread
Humility. Being a team player. Knowing your lane.
The tell
Later, you say “I thought that, but I didn’t say anything.”
What it protects
The risk of being wrong in front of people, or of being right and resented for it. Holding back means your judgment is never on the line.
Where it shows up
Scale, when the size of the room makes you small. Opposition, when you have the counterargument and swallow it. Depletion and Repair, when you quietly withdraw instead of saying what you need.
The move back
Say the thing. Once, plainly, before you are sure. Decide that your judgment is part of what you owe the people around you, not something you hold in reserve.
